How to order in a French Café

You should know that the vast majority of French cafés are locally owned and family-operated. A café in one place can be not exactly the same as somewhere else. General guidelines exist but French café owners do things of their own. 

 

 

The Best Café in Paris are fare away from tourist ways. Try a café where locals are home. If you want to work at a café You should know that it isn't common yet. Don't forget to order something every hour not to be impolite.

 

  • Un café s’il vous plaît

an espresso, about 1/4 cup of liquid with some sugar on the side.

  • Un déca s'il vous plaît

an espresso shot and decaffeinated.

  • Un café allongé s'il vous plaît

an espresso shot with little bit hot water added. About 1/3 to 1/2 cup of liquid.

  • Un café au lait s'il vous plaît:

a shot of espresso with milk. The milk might be on the side or already mixed in. Usually 1/2 cup of liquid.

  • Un café léger s'il vous plaît                              
  • Un café allongé or
  • un Américain or
  • un café léger
an espresso shot with a little bit of hot water added to it 1/3 to 1/2 cup of liquid
  • Un noisette s'il vous plaît

an espresso shot with a teaspoon's worth of milk. 

  • Un café crême s'il vous plaît
  • Un petit café crême s'il vous plaît
  • Un grand café crême s'il vous plaît

a petit café crême or a grand café crême. It's usually not cream but 2% milk. In France you cannot specify what milk you want with your coffee.

  • Un cappuccino

a shot of espresso with frothed milk. Sometimes it can be whipped cream and some chocolate powder on top.
  • Un Latte

 one shot of espresso and 1 cup of milk.

  • Un café-liégeois s'il vous plaît

it is not coffee but a dessert - a scoop of coffee ice cream with sweet coffee syrup on top and usually some whipped cream. 

  • Un chocolat-liégois s'il vous plaît
chocolate with ice cream crème chantilly. it is a drink or dessert.
  • Un café gourmand s'il vous plaît

a shot of espresso (or allongé) served with a small bite-sized desserts.

  • Un thé noir s'il vous plaît
Black tea, please.
  • Un thé vert s'il vous plaît
Green tea, please.
  • Une infusion s'il vous plaît

herbal teas. At some places You can also choose. 

  • Un café serré s'il vous plaît

a shot of espresso with even less water than normal, so less than a 1/4 cup.

  • Un verre d'eau s'il vous plaît

cafés in France do not want to rush you, they may not bring the bill unless you ask. If you're in a hurry, go to the counter to pay.
