Arc de Triomphe from Above

The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Under its vault is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier during the First World War.

The Arc de Triomphe was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806 as the central link of the ‘Ax historique’ (the historical axis, succession of monuments and major thoroughfares on the route from the Louvre courtyard to the great arch of the defense); The arch set the tone for public monuments with triumphant patriotic messages. Inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome, Italy, the Arc de Triomphe has a total height of 50 meters, a width of 45 meters and a depth of 22 meters, while its large vault is 29.19 meters high and 14.62 meters wide.

The smaller transverse vaults are 18.68 m high and 8.44 m wide. Three weeks after the Paris Victory Parade in 1919 (which marked the end of hostilities in World War I), Charles Godefroy flew in his Nieuport biplane under the main vault of the arch. and this event was captured on newsreels.

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris was the tallest Arc de Triomphe until the completion of the 1938 Revolution Monument in Mexico City, which is 67 meters high. The Arc de Triomphe in Pyongyang, built in 1982, is modeled on the Arc de Triomphe and is slightly higher, 60 m. The Grand Arch in La Defense, near Paris, is at an altitude of 110 meters. Although not named the Arc de Triomphe, it was designed from the same model and perspective of the Arc de Triomphe. La Grande Arche (Large Arch) is considered the tallest arch in the world.

External examination of the Arc de Triomphe is provided during a sightseeing tour of Paris.
