Residents of other European cities, of course, put forward their contenders for this unofficial title, but the fact remains - the Grand Place remains the most beautiful square in Europe. A small space of a rectangular square, surrounded by Gothic and Baroque buildings, makes an indelible impression on the guests of Brussels. Only narrow lanes lead to the square and the Market Square opens unexpectedly to guests, showing its beauty and large size.
"Flower carpet" at Grand Place in Brussels
The Grand Place was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique architectural ensemble. The square that emerged in the Middle Ages was almost completely destroyed in the 17th century. Only the town hall and the King's House have survived from the former luxury. By the way, the House of the King has nothing to do with monarchs. Once a bakery was arranged in it, then the building was given for judicial and penitentiary needs, today it has turned into the City Museum.
The deserted square was quickly surrounded by new Baroque houses, each of which belonged to a specific craft guild, signs of which can be seen on the gables and rooftops. Today's Market Square is an ideal stroll. There are many cozy cafes, chocolate shops and restaurants where you can taste local beers. On August 15, every even year, the Brussels people cover the square with a carpet of flowers. Spectators sit behind fences around the perimeter and admire the exquisite patterns of multi-colored begonias.
