Colmar is one of the oldest towns in France, in the region Alsace. His birth dates back to 823. Since then, it has changed from German to French and vice versa, which has left an imprint on its architecture, history and atmosphere.
Fortunately, the wars spared Colmar, preserving its pristine antiquity, which include: one of the most beautiful in Europe, the Cathedral of St. Martin, the Dominican church with the famous painting by M. Schongauer "Maria on a background of roses" (1445-1491), one of the most visited museums in France "Unterlinden". Here are collected the most remarkable works of the Middle Ages: painting of the Colmar school, romantic and Gothic sculptures.
Colmar is a city of surprises. One of them is waiting for you in the very center, in the building of the 13th century Dominican monastery, where the Unterlinden art museum is now located. The Unterlinden Museum offers a broad panorama of the history of art and civilization. The section of archeology allows us to trace the development of the technique of making objects: from polished stone tools of the Neolithic period to jewelry of the Bronze and Iron Ages.
