Itinerary

Travelling in Europe, you'll come across numerous monuments dedicated to World War I—referred to in France as La Grande Guerre. The total number of military and civilian casualties during the war is estimated at around 40 million, including between 15 to 22 million deaths and approximately 23 million wounded soldiers, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.

Countless memorials, museums, cemeteries and historic sites are scattered across former WWI battlefields, and visiting them all in a single day is impossible.

However, it is possible to focus on key sites where Canadians, Australians, Americans, New Zealanders, and South Africans fought. We've prepared a basic itinerary for you, which can be customized to suit your interests.

09:00 - 12:00 The Canadian National Vimy Memorial visit

09:00 - 12:00 The Canadian National Vimy Memorial includes the historic site of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. During our visit, we will also explore the nearby Canadian Cemetery No. 2, Zivy Crater Cemetery, and the Canadian Artillery Memorial.

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is dedicated to the memory of members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who were killed during the First World War. It also serves as a place of remembrance for Canadian soldiers who died or were presumed dead in France during the war and have no known grave.

The monument stands at the heart of a 100-hectare (250-acre) preserved battlefield park, covering part of the ground over which the Canadian Corps launched their assault during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

On April 12, 1917, the battle marked the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together. This moment became a powerful symbol of Canadian unity, achievement, and sacrifice.

13:00 - 16:00 The International Memorial of Notre-Dame de Lorette, also known as the Ring of Remembrance, is a unique memorial in the world. Designed by architect Philippe Prost, it bears the names of 579,606 soldiers who died during the First World War in the departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais. These names are listed in alphabetical order, without any distinction of nationality, race, or religion. They are engraved on 500 stainless steel panels, each three meters high, arranged in an elliptical ring measuring 328 meters in circumference, with a third of the structure extending in cantilever over the edge of the Lorette hill.

Necropolis of Notre-Dame de Lorette located in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, the hill of Notre-Dame de Lorette, with its commanding position and the brutal battles it witnessed, was established in 1919 as a place of remembrance for the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers. Today, the temporary cemetery created during the Battles of Artois has become a national necropolis, consolidating over 150 cemeteries. More than 42,000 soldiers are buried here, making Notre-Dame de Lorette the largest national war cemetery in France.
